Lawyer and author Michael G. Trachtman provides the layperson with a valuable reference and introductory look at forty-four important Supreme Court cases. This insightful 256-page book includes the following ten chapters: 1. How the Supreme Court Became Supreme, 2. One Nation Under God? Matters of Church and State, 3. Innocent Until Proven Guilty: The Rights of the Accused, 4. The Melting Pot: Race, Discrimination, and Diversity, 5. Playing Politics, 6. The Right To Do What You Want, 7. “Big Government” In Your Business and Your Backyard, 8. Limiting the Imperial Presidency, 9. How Free is Free Speech?, and 10. Intended for the layperson, Trachtman does a wonderful job of keeping the book accessible and fun to read. “The Supreme Court serves as the ultimate interpreter and protector of our most fundamental rights—the rights set forth in the Constitution.”4. Clearly defines concepts. “The Constitution is, by its own words, the “supreme law of the land.” Most of the Constitution deals with the creation of a federal government—establishing the three branches; defining their powers; and, very important to the framers, limiting their powers.”5. Provides the essence of the Bill of Rights.6. Important insights into the Supreme Court. “Most cases are decided clearly and decisively, but approximately twenty to thirty percent of the cases carry only a 5–4 majority.”7. Provides the legacy of key cases. “Marbury v. Madison gave us the opportunity to remain the government of laws, not men, that is a prime hallmark of our greatness as a nation.”8. Describes some of the worst decisions in Supreme Court history. “At its core, in the Dred Scott decision the Supreme Court ruled that slaves and free blacks were not citizens worthy of constitutional protection, and could lawfully be claimed as property, even in states that had outlawed slavery.”9. Each chapter begins with a chapter-appropriate quote. “A union of government and religion tends to destroy government and degrade religion.” —Hugo L. Black, Supreme Court Justice, 1937–71”10. The issue of separation of church and state. “Justice Black, writing for the majority, put the issue into its historical context, recalling “that this very practice of establishing governmentally composed prayers for religious services was one of the reasons which caused many of our early colonists to leave England and seek religious freedom in America.””11. A look at the Scopes “Monkey Trial”. “The result: A unanimous Supreme Court ruled that a ban on the teaching of evolution violates the Establishment Clause.”12. Outstanding dissents. Consider Justice Ginsburg’s dissent on the Hobby Lobby case involving disputed contraception coverage to their employees. “Justice Ginsburg angrily disagreed. She called the majority opinion a “decision of startling breadth” through which profit-making businesses could simply cite their owners’ religious beliefs, and through that means determine which laws they will and will not be required to follow. This, she said, elevated the owners’ religious beliefs over the disadvantages that their religion-based opt-outs impose on others—a company could raise a religious objection to virtually anything, and “the government, i.e., the general public, can pick up the tab.””13. Cases involving race. “Overruling more than a half century of precedent, Warren plainly stated that the doctrine of “separate but equal” has no place in American education—and, by implication, anywhere else in America.”14. The dissent on Citizens United. Consider Justice Stevens dissent on Citizens United on the issue of campaign financing. “He scoffed at the majority’s conclusion—which, he pointed out, was not backed by any evidence or data—that buying access does not lead to corruption.” “The result: Corporations and individuals have the unlimited right to contribute as much money as they want to organizations that support and oppose political candidates.”15. The Second Amendment. “The so-called conservative wing of the Court (Justices Scalia, Thomas, Kennedy, Roberts, and Alito) won the day, and took the politically conservative position. Justice Antonin Scalia wrote the majority opinion, ultimately concluding that the right to bear arms is each individual’s right, having nothing to do with service in a militia.”16. A look at same-sex marriage. “This time, unlike Citizens United, for instance, Justice Kennedy sided with the liberals, and he wrote the majority opinion: he found that same-sex marriage is a fundamental right protected by the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Constitution.”17. Issues involving the Commerce Clause. “The Supreme Court’s willingness to expand Congress’s rights under the Commerce Clause reached a zenith in 1964. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin in places of public accommodation, like hotels and restaurants.”18. Cases involving monopolies. “In an undeniably landmark case, the Court broke up Standard Oil into separate geographic units (not unlike what happened in the telephone industry decades later). In so doing, the Court announced a new rule to be applied in future monopoly cases—the so-called “rule of reason.” “19. A look at the separation of powers. “To his credit, Nixon complied less than a week later. The House Judiciary Committee had already begun impeachment proceedings, and Nixon knew that the evidence on the tapes would seal his fate. On August 8, 1974, reading the writing on the wall, Nixon resigned—the first president ever to do so. Vice President Gerald Ford assumed the presidency.”20. How free is free speech? “Fundamentally, Brandenburg provides a constitutional safe haven for virtually all speech that communicates an idea or position, no matter how repugnant. Our traditions so respect the right of free speech that our government will protect even those who espouse that it be overthrown.”21. A look at the impact of new technologies. “The Chief Justice then answered the question as directly as it could be answered: “Our answer to the question of what police must do before searching a cell phone seized incident to an arrest is accordingly simple—get a warrant.” In other words, the “search incident to arrest” rule will no longer apply to cell phones.”Negatives:1. It’s a great resource for laypersons who are interested in the Supreme Court but don’t want to be bothered with in depth, esoteric language. Lawyer and author Michael G. Trachtman provides readers with forty-four Supreme Court cases that have an impact on our lives. I like the aim and the approach of this book. I may read the full text of Supreme Court decisions from time to time, but for many topics, a straightforward "what, basically, did it say?" is what I need to have answered. The language is very straightforward and geared to the non-expert.

This book was required reading for a course I am taking. I thought it would be a book of legal talk, but it wasn't. Very interesting case studies of how justices come to their conclusions. Although I did not agree with some of case outcomes, it was an eyeopener as to how decisions are made.To me, these cases had a balance of justices. Now I am alarmed what the outcomes would have been if court had been or will be unbalanced.

I originally bought this book because several of the kids I tutor were required to read it over the summer and I wanted to be on the same page as them. Now, I'm just really enjoying the book. I started it two days ago and I'm almost done with it. It gets into the pertinent information of the cases without getting overwhelming or into too much legalize. For the legalize it does use, there are clear definitions with the usage so there is no looking up to be done. This was required reading for two different high school social studies classes, but it's a really good book for anyone interested in our nation's history or looking for a good starting point for looking at supreme court history. Some parts are remarkably funny and the book engages the reader well. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject matter or someone studying U.S. Government and looking for a good solid base of knowledge to start with.Really, every American should read this book.

Great book. It explains the most historic Supreme Court cases in an accessible manner. It's very interesting and relevant to today.

This book looks at 40+ of the most impactful Court cases in American history. It is a really good starting text if you’re interested in how the court works and which cases have been seen as important and why. You also see how cases build off of each other and sometimes overrule one another as times change.

Mr. Trachtman's writing style will draw you in before you finish page 2. He comfortably walks you through some very complicated Supreme Court decisions as if you are sitting in the court room and aware of the intracicies on both sides of the case. Then, he informs the reader of the ramifications of these decisions on society, allowing you to introspect them into your own life. I highly recommend this book as an informative tour of the interworkings of the Supreme Court from both a practical, legal and political perspective. I truly enjoyed it while being educated and informed about the importance of the Court as an instrument of law and it's impact on our society.

I share the stories with my education law class. They are well written and easy for non-attorneys to understand.The students are able to see how the precedents in the cases apply to public schools.

The Cold War ended in 1989 after the fall of the Berlin Wall with barely a shot exchanged in anger. It was one of history's longest standoffs. Two of the mightiest military power blocs the World has ever seen faced each other across a ribbon of land which became the heaviest defended stretch of territory since the trenches of World War 1. The Inner German Border. On one side NATO, with a concentration of force which never dissipated after victory over Nazi Germany at the end of World War 2. Operating from hardened bunkers and aircraft shelters, life was a long rehearsal for World War 3. On the other side The Warsaw Pact engaged in a struggle to impose communism on unwilling satellites trying to match a technically superior foe by sheer weight of numbers.

To understand the motivations of the men who flew the iconic Phantom, you need to appreciate what went on in their daily lives on the ground and in the air. The Phantom and the Su27 are characters in this story and they become pawns in the chess match. In the Su27 Flanker, the Soviets have a fighter which has the potential to redress the technological balance and if the West can exploit its secrets, the delicate balance may tip in its favour.

About the Author
Dave Gledhill is an aviation enthusiast and aviator. Having been awarded his pilot's licence at the age of 17, he was commissioned in the RAF in 1974 and trained as an air navigator, before converting to the F4 Phantom in the Air Defence role. After tours in the UK and Germany, he went on to be a radar tactics instructor on the Operational Conversion Unit. One of the first instructors on the new Tornado F2, he eventually became the Executive Officer on the OCU and OC1435 Flight flying the Tornado F3. He had extensive staff career in the UK Ministry of Defence, the UK Air Warfare Centre, the Joint Command and Control Warfare Center, San Antonio Texas and the USAF Warfare Center at Nellis Air Force Base.

His first book was the critically acclaimed "The Phantom In Focus" looking at the operational career of the RAF Phantom FGR2. His 2nd book is "Fighters Over The Falklands" looking at daily life on the fighter squadron in the South Atlantic.

A native of North Carolina, Josephine Reed was educated at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (B.A., English), Appalachian State University (B.A., biology and chemistry), and Virginia Tech (Ph.D., chemistry). Besides her many, many years as a student, she has spent time as a department store clerk, a waitress, a banker, a bartender, and a chemistry instructor. She continues her eclectic career at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario, where she shares her life and her work with the co-author and their son. Still an English major at heart, Josie has always had a secret desire to be a writer, preferably a poet, and is delighted to be a part of the making of this book.

Tomas Hudlicky was born and raised in Prague, Czechoslovakia and emigrated to the US in 1968. He received his PhD in 1977 under the direction of Professor Ernest Wenkert in the field of indole alkaloid total synthesis. He then spent a year at the University of Geneva working under the late Professor Wolfgang Oppolzer on the synthesis of isocomene. He began his academic career in 1978 at the Illinois Institute of Technology and moved to Virginia tech (1982) and to the University of Florida(1995). In 2003, he accepted an offer from Brock University where he currently holds the position of Canada Research Chair professor of Organic synthesis and Biocatalysis. His current research interests include the development of enantioselective synthetic methods, bacterial dioxygenase-mediated degradation of aromatics and isolation of chiral metabolites for use in asymmetric synthesis, design and synthesis of fluorinated inhalation anesthetic agents, synthesis of morphine and Amaryllidaceae alkaloids, organic electrochemistry, and design of unnatural oligo-saccharide conjugates and polymers with new molecular properties. His hobbies include martial arts, music, hockey, and skiing and he enjoys all of these with his 17 year old son Jason.

About the Author

Josephine Wiley Reed was born and raised in North Carolina, receiving her PhD under Professor David Kingston at Virginia Tech in 1988. She holds a BA in biology with chemistry minor from the Appalachian State University and a BA in English from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She has taught organic chemistry courses at Virginia Tech and has held the position of Senior Research Associate at Virginia Tech, University of Florida and Brock University since 1989. She has also served as the editorial assistant for the North American Editorial Office of J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Trans 1 and 2, as a member of the organizing committee for the Symposium on the Latest Trends in Organic Synthesis, and as a consultant to TDC Research, Inc, a custom synthesis company.
